Dream Living Japanese Style

Not only is this design stunning but when you read about the use of the two structures that make up the home, you realize you are looking at heaven.

The graphics that guide movement between the two structures prove that simplicity can be the ultimate.

Xylish Thinking

Screen_shot_2010-02-10_at_11

Just read a great article by Snow Magazine's Bianca Beuttel on Xylish chewing gum.

Chewing gum promises a transformational experience as the taste explodes in the mouth and Xylish believes that the packaging should promise the same transformational experience.

They put thought to the purchase vs ownership experience and reflected this in two layers of packaging.

The first is a garish outer layer that has to capture the buyer's attention but once the buyer owns the gum, the outer layer comes off and in its place is a more stylish - discrete - inner packaging that would look good in any environment.

Brilliant thinking that explores life outside the company's key business objective - consumption.

It's hard to find recent coverage on Hiroki Nakamura and what he's doing for shoe design but his designs are quietly present in stores like Colette in Paris and Jeffrey in NY.

His designs are influenced by today's ubiquitous standards but his signature takes the standard to something unexplainably different. It's almost like his designs evoke a feeling rather than an explicit design statement.

If you can stand to hear stupid questions then this video's worth checking out to understand Hiroki's perspective on shoe design http://bit.ly/cxfi0j

I loved his comment about stitching the souls of the shoe in such a way that if the soul wears out, you can unstitch it and replace it with a new one.

His shoes are expensive but when you understand the passion he applies to each design, you know it's worth it.

Thought this interview from 2004 was good as well http://bit.ly/9KWkuI

Japanese Vision

(download)

These are two images I caught on neojaponisme.com today.

I love the simplicity and the stories they tell.

The tie one is about a campaign in Japan 'Cool Biz' that's trying to get white-collar workers to stop wearing jackets and ties in the summer thereby requiring less air conditioning - helping the environment.

The letters coming out of the megaphone relates to the challenges one faces when translating literary works. I love how it captures the subtle interpretations of the letter A.
