Listen and Paint
Richard Lewer was the talk of the art fair in Melbourne recently.
After receiving a prize that gave him the opportunity to work out of a studio in NY for 6 months, the first thing Lewer decided to do on his arrival was to buy a Police scanner, so he could listen in to crime events taking place around the borough. He listened to this scanner 24/7 and used the 10-64s as inspiration for expression through his art and writing. His installation in Melbourne combined his writing, art and the actual 10-64 recordings that led to the work. Here's an interesting interview on his work http://bit.ly/bHSuWs Lewer captured the stuff we try to ignore and it's raw.It just shows you that creativity can make the mundane seem interesting when seen through new eyes.
